Research in Motion to add up to 1,000 jobs in Irving

Research In Motion Ltd. maker of the popular BlackBerry device — said Monday that it has chosen Irving to be the site of its U.S. headquarters, and plans to hire as many as 1,000 workers at its new offices there over the next few years.

The company has several dozen employees in Irving already.

Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive officer of Ontario-based RIM, said Monday at a press conference at the company’s new offices in the Las Colinas area that the new hires will be in a variety of fields, from research and development to legal.

“Access to skilled people,” he said, was the main reason RIM choose Irving, although half a dozen other cities were considered over the last several months.

“There was a fair bit of contention internally over where it should be,” Mr. Balsillie said.
