Give us some substance!

I just took a look at sausage fingers latest un-boxing of the HTC Mogul and in typical fashion it tells me nothing about the device. What I don’t understand is why companies like HTC will send out review units to sites that basically do nothing with the unit. Through this un-boxing we get to see the device, sync cable, documentation, packaging. The big news with this device is that it has a docking cradle.

So what does this video tell me? Nothing! I could have seen all of that on the HTC site. What value add do these stupid un-boxings bring? It is a waste of time and energy. I suppose his rationale is that if he does this it will satisfy HTC so he can keep the device. Personally I feel that he is doing a disservice to both HTC and his readers. If I were a consumer looking to purchase a new device I would like to see what it is actually capable of. They should be loading applications and putting the device through it’s paces so we can get a good look at how it performs. A good reviewer will push the product to its limits.

Unfortunately there are a lot of sites out there that will give a device a great rating so they can keep the unit and continue to get free units. That is not the right way to go about it. Take these sites with a grain of salt. You can usually tell which sites do this by looking back at their reviews. If you see that they constantly rate products at 4.8/9 or can find nothing wrong with the unit  you know they are only in for the free product.

You need to also take into consideration who is reviewing the product. Some of these people don’t even know how to use these units and they claim to be experts. I’m sorry but I am not going to listen to someone who stays at home all day and might venture out once or twice a month to the supermarket or their vacation home. This is not a true mobile user.

My advice to the consumer is to go out an look for sites that do a decent review. There are plenty out there that actually take the time and effort to test the unit and let you know what the pro’s and con’s are.

Remember it’s your money and you want to make sure you are getting what you are paying for!
